Christine Connor is the first woman president in the 60-year history of the 14,000-member Unifor Local 414, representing retail workers across Ontario. With more than 20 years of union activism, she has the political savvy, strength and understanding needed to meet the challenges facing her own local and the labour movement as a whole. Christine started in the produce department of A&P grocery store in 1990 where she held numerous elected positions, including steward, health and safety representative and executive board member. In 2004 Christine was elected President of local 414 and was appointed to the National executive board also in 2004.
Christine’s determination and thorough understanding of the issues facing retail workers, has helped make gains for some of the most precarious workers in the Canadian economy. Christine has led political campaigns to protect workers in the retail sector including raising the minimum wage. More recently, Christine led Local 414 in a campaign to preserve statutory holidays for 400,000 retail workers in the city of Toronto.
