TORONTO, Sept. 17, 2014 /CNW/ - A push by the United Auto Workers to end two-tier wages in American auto plants is a welcome move that should help Unifor improve wages and working conditions in the Canadian auto industry, Unifor National President Jerry Dias says.
Following four days of meetings last week in Toronto the Proposal Committee reached consensus on a plan that establishes a “robust regional presence” and outlines how the new union could be run.
More than 1,000 CAW members and guests will gather downtown Toronto on August 20-24 for the union’s first national Constitutional and Collective Bargaining Convention, taking place at the Sheraton Centre.
Nearly 1,000 CAW delegates have voted unanimously in favour of moving forward with creating a new union with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union (CEP).
CEP, one of Canada's largest unions, will confront challenges that workers face in this weakened economy, but also the challenges that labour unions in general face.
CEP local union leaders and members taking part in the union’s convention this week in Québec City have voted in favour of forming a new union with the CAW.
