Waterloo regional transit workers take strike vote

February 27, 2017

Waterloo—Transit service in the Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge area could be disrupted later this month if the municipality doesn’t reach a fair deal with transit workers represented by Unifor.

“There are serious matters related to working conditions that have to be solved before we can reach a new contract,” said Rick Lonergan, President of Unifor Local 4304. “Our members are proud to serve the people of Kitchener and Waterloo but unresolved issues on working conditions must be addressed.”

Unifor Local 4304 achieved a 98% strike mandate from its membership on February 26, making job action possible if a deal is not reached before March 19 at midnight. The local represents 644 transit operators, service attendants, and skilled trades workers at Grand River Transit.

The union’s contract expired at the end of last year. Current negotiations began in December 2016.
