TORONTO, Jan. 28, 2016 /CNW/ - Unifor supports the Canadian Airport Workers Union in its effort to seek justice for 430 Goodwill workers, thrown out of work when Goodwill of Toronto, Eastern, Central and Northern Ontario abruptly closed its 16 stores and 10 donations centres on January 17.

"Unifor stands by the CAWU as it continues to advocate, organize aid and demand answers for its members," said Unifor National President Jerry Dias.

Unifor backs the CAWU grievance demanding remittance of severance pay, vacation monies owing and pay in lieu of required notice. "Many of the employees were living paycheck to paycheck. These people were blindsided by Goodwill management, any disruption in their income means there is literally no money for food or shelter," said Dias. "It's shameful that they are being forced to fight for money that is rightfully theirs."

The closure of Goodwill locations highlights the precarious state of retail workers. Unifor represents over 20,000 workers in retail and continues to work to increase both income and job security across the sector.

Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
