Armada Toolworks locks out workers

Armada Toolworks refused to allow its workers to enter the plant for their regular shift on December 15, locking them out of their workplace 10 days before Christmas.

The workers of Armada Toolworks are represented by Unifor Local 222 and the two parties were involved in ongoing contract negotiations. Approximately 70 per cent of the 200 unionized workers are women, many of them single parents dependent on their paycheques from Armada.

The majority of the workforce makes $14.26 per hour and an additional 123 non-unionized temporary workers earn only $10.25, the minimum wage.

“The 22,000 members of Unifor Local 222 are shocked and disappointed at this attack on the community of Lindsay just days prior to Christmas,” said Local 222 President Ron Svajlenko.

Unifor Local 222 and the workers of Armada are calling on the management of Armada Toolworks to immediately return to negotiations and responsibly bargain a fair collective agreement that will allow the Local 222 members to celebrate the season with their families instead of facing the bleak future this corporation has chosen to give them.

Armada Toolworks is an auto parts maker that supplies a variety of global vehicle manufacturers.
