August 25, 2017 Peterborough – General Electric has eliminated approximately 358 good manufacturing jobs as the company announced it will cease operations at its Peterborough, Ontario plant by the end of the third quarter in 2018. “General Electric has been an integral part of Peterborough’s history for over a century,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias. “Now the company is rewarding the loyalty of the community by pulling up the stakes and moving jobs out of the country.” The workers, members of Unifor Locals 599 and 524 were informed of the impending shutdown today. Unifor will begin negotiation of a closure agreement with General Electric Canada beginning the week of September 18, 2017. Work from the Peterborough plant will be shifted to the United Kingdom, France, Brazil and Mexico. “We must stop the exodus of good middle-class jobs,” said Dias. “Today’s announcement by GE drives home the importance of achieving a fair deal for worker’s as NAFTA is renegotiated.” Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers in every major area of the economy.
