For two weeks in June, more than 20 member organizers – mostly Unifor-represented autoworkers – visited Honda workers in Alliston, Ontario, to discuss the benefits of working in a unionized plant.
“The response to this outreach blitz has been fantastic. Workers at Honda understand how a union can improve both their workplace and help build the community,” said Organizing Acting Director Danny McBride.
The blitz operated out of Unifor’s Organizing office in Alliston, and saw member organizers drive hundreds of kilometres a day to meet with Honda workers at their homes. There were also two rallies held outside Honda’s plants as Honda workers handed out newsletters at the plants.
The member organizers included Unifor members working at Ford, General Motors and Fiat-Chrysler plants represented by Unifor, as well as the Bombardier plant in Downsview and other employers.
“Every day of this blitz, auto workers were talking to auto workers about the challenges facing the industry, and the important role a union has in building a better industry and a stronger community for all,” McBride said.
Unifor’s office in Alliston has been active in the community since officially opening last fall, participating in a local food and toy drive in December and during spring the union sponsored two kilometres of a half-marathon fundraiser for the Alliston hospital and a local children’s baseball team. The union will also participate in the Alliston potato festival this summer.
The Alliston office provides a meeting space to network and reach out to workers employed at several sites in the area – including Honda supplier F&P Manufacturing in nearby Tottenham.
