Unifor extends a warm welcome to 38 new Porter Airlines employees based out of Ottawa International Airport (YOW).

“At a time when Canada’s aviation sector needs more workers, not fewer, I am thrilled to have Unifor fighting on behalf of these new members,” said Lana Payne, Unifor National President.

“These workers are concerned about job security, wages, and decent work – the same issues in aviation Unifor has been consistently vocal about. We are ready to fight for them.”

These new members are customer service representatives and customer service leads, who perform ticketing and aircraft boarding for passengers in the airport terminal.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board approved an interim certification last week.

"On behalf of the YOW customer service representatives, we are very pleased to be joining Unifor,” said Unifor member Aaron Dell.

“We have been anticipating this for some time and are very excited. I am proud to be a Porter employee and excited that we are now members of Unifor and have gained the tools needed to change our workplace for the better. As our workforce has grown, maintaining a positive work atmosphere and morale at YOW has become increasingly difficult. We look forward to now having this much-needed support to maintain and improve our work environment."

This unit is not yet assigned to a local, however Unifor also represents Porter Airlines workers at Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto with three certifications covering customer service representatives, fixed base operation and ramp attendants as members of Local 2002.

Unifor began its organizing campaign on Dec. 12, 2022.
