Unifor condemns the chilling actions of the anonymous figures who targeted and harassed Carrie Tait, a Globe and Mail journalist who has been investigating political interference at the Alberta Health Agency.

On July 10, 2025, an anonymous X account called, “The Brokedown,” posted surveillance photos of Tait in a dog park and at dinner. They also referred to her daily routines and threatened to “start exposing Carrie Tait’s sources in the continuing health care saga.”

Unifor believes these are cowardly attempts to silence a journalist who is engaged in legitimate and much-needed investigative reporting. Attacks like these are a direct threat to our press freedoms, Charter rights, and Canadian democracy itself. Journalists should not have to be afraid for their safety for reporting tough truths and holding the powerful to account.

While Premier Danielle Smith denounced the X account, the Alberta government must go beyond condemnation—upholding press freedom and urging its supporters to do the same.

Journalists facing threats to their safety should be able to count on protection from their elected officials.

When leaders stand idly by as journalists are belittled, harassed and intimidated, it only emboldens bad actors.

Unifor stands with Tait and journalists across the country who work every day to inform the public, hold the powerful to account, and stand up for fact-based truth-telling.

Unifor supports initiatives to protect and support journalists when they have been confronted with abuse and harassment. Help is Here is a website by Unifor’s Media Council that provides links to many practical supports for journalists. In addition, the Canadian Association of Journalists’ Canadian News Industry Peer Support is a pilot project that pairs trained journalists with journalists who need support.

Unifor represents more than 10,000 media workers, including journalists in the broadcast and print news industry.
