TORONTO - A solidarity event is underway at Lear Corporation in Whitby, Ontario in support of Unifor's #SaveOshawaGM campaign.

The event began at 7:00 a.m. today and demonstrates opposition to GM’s plan to end production at Oshawa Assembly, demanding government intervention.

“GM is set to devastate this community, yet despite repeated calls we continue to wait for meaningful intervention from federal and provincial government,” continued Dias. “We demand that government act to protect these workers who stand to lose everything, and work with Unifor and GM to find a solution for the Oshawa Assembly Plant.”

The 350 workers at Lear, members of Unifor Local 222, face probable job loss if GM Oshawa is closed, along with thousands more workers in facilities that provide auto parts and services for the plant.

Lear Corporation Whitby is a just-in-time seat supplier for Oshawa Assembly Plant.

Earlier this week, GM announced that it earned US $8.1 billion profit in 2018. While the company is extremely profitable, GM still plans to cause the elimination of tens of thousands of Canadian jobs. A recent economic impact study shows that the closure of GM Oshawa would result in 24,000 lost jobs across the economy and a loss of $1 billion per year in government revenue.
