Almost 4,500 workers across Canada and across the Canadian economy joined Unifor in 2018.
“It was another great year for Unifor’s Organizing Department in 2018,” Organizing Director Kellie Scanlan said.
Unifor’s Organizing department welcomed a wide range workers to the labour movement throughout the year, from hotel workers to manufacturing workers to warehouse workers to school bus drivers, and more, including:
- 255 chemical engineers, maintenance workers, electricians, instrumentation workers, millwrights and pipefitters at the Shell Scotford refinery and chemicals plant in in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta who had worked for more than a decade to unionize
- 235 manufacturing workers at Cooper Standard Automobile, Sherbrooke, Quebec
- 216 school bus drivers at Campeau Bus Lines Ltd in Durham, Ontario
- 299 workers in facility services at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario
- 98 gaming workers at the Flamboro Elements Casino in Dundas, Ontario
- 15 auto technicians at Portland Street Honda in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
“We have dedicated full-time organizers across Canada. We work closely with locals in every sector and we have a great team of member organizers working with us,” Scanlan said.
As the year ended and a new one began, Unifor had several active campaigns on the go in hospitality and gaming, manufacturing, school buses, health care and more.
“In 2019, we are building on the successes of 2018, and looking forward to another great year,” Scanlan said.
