TORONTO, Dec. 11, 2015 /CNW/ - Unifor Local 523 President Rick Alakas will speak to about 300 retirees from Stelpipe and Welland Pipe to discuss health benefit options after U.S Steel Canada immediately suspended all supports.
"To offer a safety net and met the needs of our retirees, Unifor is working with the government and Green Shield Canada to ensure that no retiree is prevented from accessing the health services that are desperately needed," Alakas said.
"Unifor will not allow U.S Steel Canada to play games with the health of retirees and their families."
A representative from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care will be at the meeting to discuss benefit options and support from the Ontario Trillium Drug Program, available to retirees over the age of 65. There will also be a rep from Green Shield Canada to discuss a new program between Unifor and Prosum Health Benefits.

The Ontario Superior Court recently approved the U.S. Steel Canada Inc.'s ability to sever its operations in Canada which lead to the immediate elimination of all health benefits of former employees of Stelpipe and Welland Pipe plants in Welland, affecting approximately 300 families.
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union merged.
