Unifor commemorates World Water Day 2024 under the United Nations’ theme "Water for Peace.”
More than 2.2 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water. Water insecurity poses a threat to human rights and global peace—scarcity contributes to geopolitical tensions, political unrest, and mass migration. Sustainable water management and international cooperation must a global priority. As a labour union, Unifor has an essential role to play in working with governments at all levels and other key partners to ensure water remains a public good, while continuing to block corporate attempts to further commodify this critical public resource.
Water-related fatalities account for 70 percent of all deaths related to natural disasters. As nations with uneven access to resources struggle to adopt to the long-term impacts of climate change, vulnerable populations worldwide are increasingly susceptible to climate-induced catastrophes.
Unifor’s Social Justice Fund has supported water security projects and will continue to seek opportunities to support initiatives that improve access to clean water, especially in conflict-affected areas. Managing water resources cooperatively and sustainably is not only vital for life but also for ensuring peace and prosperity for workers around the world.
