At a union meeting held on September 20, 2018, members of Unifor Local 6000 ratified an agreement in principle, ending the Oldcastle strike. The members voted 65% in favour of the agreement.

"We have recommended this agreement that addresses a number of important that our members face at work," said Jean-Yves Fillion, National Representative for Unifor.

Highlights of the contract include:

  • A four-year contract with a possible fifth year on the condition of an investment of $ 2.7 million made by the employer before the end of the fourth year;
  • Wage increases of 0.4% in the first year and the equivalent of 1.6% in group insurance, 2% per year for the second, third and fourth years. Finally, in the event of a fifth year, 2.25% increase;
  • Agreements on irritants such as overlap breaks and work schedules.

The parties also agreed to use the mediation services of the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Solidarity to improve the state of labor relations within the company. The return to work will be gradual beginning on September 24.

The strike began on July 6. The efforts of union activists and advocates, in writing letters, calling the company and standing in solidarity with the striking workers were invaluable in resolving this dispute.

Oldcastle BE is located in Pointe-aux-Trembles and employs approximately 105 unionized workers. The factory manufactures glass for building construction.
