Workers at radio station CKNX in Wingham, Ont., have ratified a new three-year collective agreement with its parent company, Blackburn Media Inc.
“Congratulations to the bargaining team on negotiating a strong deal for the membership,” said Lana Payne, Unifor National President. “Local broadcasters provide a vital service to rural communities by keeping listeners informed and connected.”
The 13 workers of the station – comprised of radio announcers, editors, producers and ad sales people – reached a tentative agreement on Sept. 9, 2022 and ratified the agreement on Sept. 15, 2022.
In the contract, Blackburn Media agreed to increase wages by 3.7% in the first year and 2.5% in the two following years.
Among the other gains included improved benefits, a signing bonus, increases in travel expenses, a new Women’s Advocate, and remote broadcasting with a flexible schedule.
“These gains secure their future for the next three years, which can be shaky in the media industry,” said Burke Moffat, vice-president of Local 591-G.
The new agreement is retroactive from June 1, 2022 and expires Sept. 1, 2025.
