Moose Jaw MLAs Lawrence and Michelson support Wakamow Valley cuts

Moose Jaw—The Brad Wall government’s cuts to the Wakamow Valley Authority (WVA) will lead to lay-offs and the degradation of Moose Jaw’s urban park. Both Sask party MLAs in the area—Greg Lawrence and Warren Michelson—voted in favour of eliminating the provincial funding for the Authority.

Urban parks in both Regina and Saskatoon retained their provincial funding.

“Moose Jaw residents have been betrayed by our own MLAs,” said Bill Lawson, President of Unifor Local 3 representing WVA workers. “This was not announced as part of any plan or public consultation before the election. It is a sneak attack on a cherished public park.”

The provincial budget delivered cuts to urban parks across Saskatchewan including Weyburn, Prince Albert, Swift Current, and North Battleford.

“These cuts will affect everyone in town who enjoys the park,” said Lawson.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
