The term precarity was adopted by social scientists to define states of employment that lack the security or benefits of more traditional employment relationships. Many labour market researchers point to precarious employment becoming the new normal in Canada’s workforce.
As researchers and organizations report on the increasing number of precarious employment situations, they are also looking at how government has responded to these trends; the need for investment in additional training and learning; the impact on the worker, from health indicators to household well-being to community connections, as well as the recommended strategies to help protect vulnerable workers.
