VANCOUVER—Members of Unifor Local 433 have won their fight for fair wage increases and safer working conditions, ending a three-week long strike at Vancouver’s Residence Inn.

“Fighting back works,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Unifor members at the Residence Inn have demonstrated again that union solidarity can help win significant contract gains.”

The contract, ratified on August 24, includes a 12% wage increase in the first year with a total increase of up to 26% by the end of the agreement. Other highlights of the three-year collective agreement include increases to benefits, vacation and reductions to housekeeping workload.

“It’s incredible what Unifor members have achieved at the Residence Inn,” said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle. “Unifor members in the hospitality sector have shown time and again that a union makes a real difference in people's lives.”

Unifor Local 433 and its supporters held a rally at the hotel on August 22 and marched to the headquarters of the management company.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
