Health care workers, trade union leaders and activists from 52 unions and 37 countries gathered to set a strategic course for the global health care sector at the UNI Care World Conference in Budapest, from September 17 to 19, 2024.

“We know that strong international partnerships are essential to achieving meaningful change,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “By working together through UNI Global, we can leverage our shared strength to build safer, more equitable workplaces for care workers everywhere.”

The conference emphasized the need for safe staffing, fair wages, and improved working conditions, with the shared goal of advancing dignity and rights for care workers globally. Unifor delegates attended sessions focusing on key priorities such as safe staffing levels, preventing violence and harassment in the workplace, and just migration practices for care workers.

“We are committed to ensuring care workers have the resources and respect they need to provide quality care,” said Assistant to the National Officers Kelly-Anne Orr. “Being part of this international movement reinforces our determination to stand up for workers’ rights at home and abroad.”

Kelly-Anne Orr was elected as the new Vice President of UNI Care, further strengthening Unifor’s role in advocating for fair working conditions on a global scale within the health care sector.

During the conference, Assistant to the National Officers Kelly-Anne Orr presented Unifor’s work in Canada and highlighted both our successes and ongoing challenges in implementing safe staffing policies across the country.

With new leadership in place and a renewed strategic plan, health care unions worldwide are determined to keep the momentum going, advocating for the wages and safe working conditions that care workers deserve.
