SAULT STE. MARIE — Paramedics represented by Unifor Local 1359 have successfully ratified a new three-year collective agreement with the District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board, securing important gains that will improve working conditions and benefits for members.

“We are proud to announce that our members have overwhelmingly ratified this agreement, with 85.7% in favour,” said Mary Casola, Unifor Local 1359 Vice President. “This deal brings well-deserved recognition for the life-saving work our paramedics perform every day.”

The agreement, which is effective from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2026, includes wage increases, enhanced psychological benefits, and improved shift premiums. These improvements address key concerns raised by the bargaining unit, which had been frustrated by the employer’s previous lack of respect for the committee’s issues.

“We were prepared to strike with 99% of members supporting strike action,” said Cathy Humalamaki, Unifor Local 1359 President. “But thanks to the dedicated efforts of our bargaining team, led by Unifor Health Care Director, Kellee Janzen, we secured a deal that our members fully support.”

The highlights of the new agreement include wage increases across the board, a $500 increase in psychological benefits (from $1,500 to $2,000), and an increase in paramedical benefits from $1,000 to $1,200. The bargaining committee was also focused on ensuring the wage increases were comparable to those of other paramedic services, successfully achieving this goal.

The contract will provide much-needed financial support to members and acknowledges the essential services they provide to the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas.

Throughout the negotiation process, the community stood behind the paramedics during several information pickets organized by the union. In recognition of this support, the paramedics feel it is important to share that an agreement has been reached between them and the DSSAB.

Unifor Local 1359 represents 90 paramedics employed by the District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board.
