Unifor is launching a new Equity Fund to encourage and support local unions who wish to step up their work on equity issues.

The new program was announced at the Black, Indigenous and Workers of Colour Conference in Port Elgin, Ont. on Sunday, and will allocate $250,000 in its founding year to support projects in 2024.

“This new funding will encourage locals to dedicate more time and resources to the fight for racial, social and gender justice for all working people,” Unifor National President Lana Payne told the conference delegates. “What a time to fight for workers and build a union for everyone, with everyone.”

Payne will appoint a review committee tasked with reviewing applications submitted, taking into account equitable distribution amongst equity deserving groups and regions. The committee will evaluate projects and make recommendations for allocated funds to the National President.

The application process is now open. Locals wishing to submit their project ideas for consideration should fill out and submit this form. For projects seeking funding in 2024, there are two deadlines: Dec. 15, 2023, at 5 p.m. EST and May 3, 2024, at 5 p.m. EST.

The fund may be used for new equity initiatives only and cannot be used to make donations to outside organizations or individuals.

The National President will provide an annual report to the National Executive Board on selected projects funded through the Local Union Equity Fund.
