Unifor Québec is expressing profound concern following the unexpected announcement of the forthcoming closure of Indorama Ventures' purified terephthalic acid (PTA) production facility in Montreal East, scheduled for September 2024.

"This news has blindsided our members and their families," said Daniel Cloutier, Unifor Quebec Director. "While we recognize the economic challenges within the industry, the decision to shutter the plant without prior consultation is entirely unacceptable. We will be demanding thorough explanations from the employer and insisting on tangible measures to mitigate the impact on our members."

The closure is expected to have far-reaching implications, potentially affecting neighboring companies such as Alpex and Parachem, where Unifor also represents workers.

"We will be vigilant in monitoring the fallout for these companies and will work diligently to protect the interests of all our members," Cloutier added.

Unifor represents approximately 80 workers at the Indorama plant, including process technicians, laboratory technicians, instrument technicians, mechanics, pipefitters, and welders.
