Unifor Local 433 members at the Residence Inn Vancouver commenced strike action on August 4, 2024, at 9 a.m. Members gave 72-hour strike notice after weeks of unsuccessful contract negotiations over fair wages, manageable workloads, and improved benefits.

"Unifor members at the Residence Inn Vancouver are striking for a fair deal,” said Lana Payne, Unifor National President. “Hospitality workers deserve the wages and benefits that reflect their hard work and dedication and are sending the employer a clear collective message.”

Despite progress on non-monetary issues since bargaining began on July 15, 2024, significant differences remain on wages. The members are demanding a contract that includes substantial wage increases, manageable workloads, and enhanced benefits to ensure they are compensated fairly for their efforts.

“We are striking because the employer’s greed has left us no other option,” said Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor Western Regional Director. "Members at this hotel have shown incredible resilience and unity, and we are determined to achieve a contract that truly values their contributions. We won’t back down until our demands are met.”

The pattern set at other Unifor hospitality workplaces includes wage increases, more manageable workloads, enhanced benefits, and strong job security provisions. These agreements set a standard that the Residence Inn Vancouver must meet to ensure equity among workers in the same industry and region.

Unifor Local 433 represents housekeeping, front desk, maintenance, and food and beverage workers at the Residence Inn Vancouver. The union's commitment to advocating for fair compensation and working conditions has resulted in this decisive action.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
