Unifor sends our solidarity to the crew and passengers of Delta Flight 4819. We are proud of Unifor members' swift response to the incident yesterday at Toronto Pearson International Airport. Unifor Local 2002, District 333 members were onsite almost immediately, providing bus transportation to the terminal and working behind the scenes to assist the Delta passengers once they reached safety at the terminal. Unifor Local 2002 Ornge paramedic members provided medical care to passengers and provided air transport to regional hospitals to those most seriously injured.
The runway incident in Toronto resulted in rerouted flights and flight delays across the country and Unifor members, including air traffic control operators at NAV Canada, customer service representatives from a multitude of airlines, ground handlers, baggage handlers, and security personnel, displayed their professionalism as they dealt with the crisis and worked diligently to restore operations.
Unifor members employed at the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) are responsible for maintaining the airport, including calming passengers frustrated by delays caused by the incident and from several snowstorms this past week.
We want to thank our members for their service. It is our members and workers in the broad aviation sectors that allow Canadians from across this country to get to where they need to go safely. We know there is so much to do to improve air travel for those who work in the industry, and for those who travel by air. Our union will continue to fight alongside you for improved working conditions in the sector, which will ultimately improve flying conditions for Canadians.
