Armoured car members at Unifor have been very active over the last year, pushing for important changes in the industry to make conditions safer for everyone – both the workers carrying out the critical job of keeping the economy moving, and the public in general. Here is a report back about our actions and successes so far.
TORONTO, Dec. 17, 2014 /CNW/ - Unifor is disappointed that Senate has passed Bill C-525 which it recognized was flawed – and is aware will make it more difficult for workers to join a union in a federally regulated sector and easier for a minority of workers to have a union's bargaining rights revoked.
GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB, Dec. 16, 2014 /CNW/ - Nearly 150 Unifor members at Canadian Forest Products achieved significant wage and benefit increases in the newest collective agreement, ratified this week.
"This deal brings us to the forefront of the industry in Alberta," said Phil Brinson, Unifor Local 446 President. "I would like to thank the bargaining committee for their work on this collective agreement."
TORONTO, Dec. 15, 2014 /CNW/ - Unifor is calling on Resolute Forest Products to do all it can to ensure a future for the Iroquois Falls paper mill it currently operates and is the heart of the local economy.
Recently, Resolute announced it is closing its newsprint mill in Iroquois Falls, putting 180 people out of a job. The mill is the town's largest employer.
TORONTO, Dec. 11, 2014 /CNW/ - Today GM announced a major investment in Mexico.
"Unifor is disappointed by this announcement but our determination to work with GM to ensure it has a strong future in Canada is unwavering," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President.
According to GM, Canada ranks #6 in its global manufacturing and is one of its strongest markets.
Human Rights Day commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948. The landmark document states that human rights are not the preserve of any one nation, or race, or gender but that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.
A woman living with a violent partner may try as many as seven times to leave before being able to make a permanent break— if she can. Each year, as many as 80 women are not able to get out. They, and often their children, are murdered by an abuser because the system has utterly failed them.
This year has been a year of tragedies for many in the world, from missing planes and sinking ferries, to armed civil unrest and schoolgirl abductions. But closer to home, 2014 marks an important anniversary in the lives of Canadians both young and old. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre in which 14 women were killed at École Polytechnique in Quebec. The reason for this brutal attack: a man “fighting feminism” and seeking revenge for the women he believed ruined his life.
TORONTO, Dec. 3, 2014 /CNW/ - Unifor, which represents thousands of cab drivers in Ontario, welcomes a private member's bill introduced in the Legislature this afternoon to address the issue of app-based bandit cabs in the province.
